Psalm 129 Song of Victory over Zion's Enemies
1 “Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth,”
Let Israel now say—/
2 “Many a time they have afflicted me from my youth;
Yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed on my back;
They made their furrows long.”
4 The Lord is righteous;
He has cut in pieces the cords of the wicked.
5 Let all those who hate Zion
Be put to shame and turned back.
6 Let them be as the grass on the housetops,
Which withers before it grows up,
7 With which the reaper does not fill his hand,
Nor he who binds sheaves, his arms.
8 Neither let those who pass by them say,
“The blessing of the Lord be upon you;
We bless you in the name of the Lord!”
Jews are not alone in being persecuted, many
individuals in many nations and many life situations also have too. What brings
God to the rescue is that despite the afflictions/persecutions, God is watching
who does not become like those who afflict them. The truly only way to get
there is to trust in the LORD's righteousness, to sever the cords of the wicked
and bring blessing to the righteous. We cannot become like the enemies who try
to plow us under.
Even beyond the the individual application of this, there is also the "one new man" application. One new man in Messiah is like a marriage between a husband and a with living as God has desired for them. The husband supplying certain strengths and the wife supplying the heart issues. In this, the persecution of Israel is a testimony to Christians, many today who have never experienced persecution because of being a Christian. In Israel a Christian can see how God is Israel's victory over their enemies. But a Christian, like a wife, can encourage Israel greatly, with empathy and heart for the battles Israel is suffering even over the past year of war.
God has been granting Israel victory. If not for God's love and plans for Israel, there has been room for Israel to be defeated - instead they have risen up to the battle, fighting valiantly for the nation's survival. We look at these things through spiritual eyes - seeing only in part but knowing in general that this is leading to the ultimate conflict throughout the world between those who are on God's side and those who have made their bed with the enemy of our souls. To the very end God is with us and is going to bring us out on the other side of all the trouble to peace, safety and eternal blessing.
